Moving along in Matthew we come to a good challenge that is often missed. It’s about fruit. Yep, ya like apples? Pears? What type of fruit do you produce? “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?”, you say. Well, Jesus compares our life’s actions with terms associated with fruit production.
Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
Throughout this “sermon” Jesus is continually challenging us to look at the attitude that we have when we do anything (re giving, prayer, fasting etc). Here, he is specifically telling us how to recognize a true God follower, BUT it also applies to our own lives as well. So, how is your harvest looking? Full and plump
fruit? Insect infested? Small and tart fruits? Little yield? A dead tree? Large shiny fruit that is dry and rotten inside? You do know that a bad tree is scheduled to be cut down and burned, right?
So, what’s your attitude on how you live your life? Good on Sunday and a completely different person the rest of the week? Good at home, power miser at work? Good with strangers, but treat those at home like dirt? How you act is equivalent to the quality of fruit you produce in your life. Have you found the attitude God would be pleased with?
