Just thinking out loud

1) If we were meant to talk on cell phones, send text messages and otherwise not talk face to face as our primary means of communication, then why do we all use facial expressions and hand gestures when we speak?  I REALLYweird get a kick out of watching people talk on their cell phones while driving!  Hands waving and stern expressions flying everywhere.  Come on, at least bang the phone on the dashboard or something….!

2) Adding to 1), to further strengthen the faulty nature of not speaking face to face, we have created emoticons in order to somehow make emails more personal.  That’s funny :) and disappointing :(   …gotcha! ;) …..sigh :I

Also, like the picture above, have you noticed more and more how groups of people hang out “together” but they really aren’t paying ANY attention to each other?  They stare at their phones and all you hears is clicking and the occasional emotional outburst.  Of course, the emotions aren’t directed at anyone that is in the group there…..WEIRD.  I remember hanging out with friends and actually TALKING.

3) If we were not made for manual labor, why does our health suffer if we work a desk job?  Use a riding lawnmower on a 1/4 acre lot?  Why do we have to “pay” a fee in order to exercise?  Last I checked there are plenty of kids outside to play with in order to get some good exercise.  Maybe I need to buy a field and farm some…. Now that would be good exercise that would pay for itself!  Run or walk the neighborhood, walk the stairs in your house (if you have them).  Lift everyday items to work your muscles, heck, who EVER lifts anything via bench-press?  For me, heavy lifting is carrying water softener salt bags and landscaping materials!  Carrying and replacing ladders, and of course, lugging the 45 lb kid around.  Mowing the yard is great too!  Get a push mower that doesn’t drive itself.  I’ve never owned one of those things.  Face it, we are lazy and have no one to blame but ourselves…. ):O

What thoughts do you have?

  1. Ha. So true. I’ve always preferred talking to people face to face. Whenever I had to go to the bank, I always went inside. The same thing with McDonald’s. To me, it just doesn’t seem right not having the physical, face-to-face contact.

I remember hanging out with friends and actually TALKING.

When I was in college, some of my favorite times was when my friends and I would just sit around and talk. I think actually talking to people has a somewhat cathartic effect. Most likely because we’re social creatures.

I saw on the news over here the other day, that there is a girl in Iowa, I think, that won the “US National Text Messaging Championship”. I thought that that was completely ridiculous. I couldn’t imagine being that obsessed with that that I could win that. I would hate it if when my friends and I hang-out all we did was not pay attention to one another.

The year that I studied in Hungary, almost every weekend, the students would have “fellowship night” which consisted of watching a movie in the meeting room and then going to bed immediately afterward. I felt that it defeated the purpose of fellowship.

  2. Movie dates and outings have to be the most unsocial events possible. Hence, why I always try to go out for dessert or coffee afterwards. Yes, yes, so we can TALK. I simply hate meeting at a movie, then parting ways after the movie. It’s like, “why did we get together again?”

  3. Jeff,

Let me reassure you: you are making the transition to Old Fart, just fine! I mean, what else does an Old Fart do but talk about how the “modern world” just doesn’t make sense anymore. ;-)

Ah, you know I’m just teasing. I hope your family is blessed and highly favored this weekend!

  4. Good morning. It’s fascinating to watch a room filled with people who are there physically, but primarily engaged in a conversation with someone elsewhere. Strange times these are.

The conveniences of having a cell phone are undeniable;almost manditory in some venues, however, there’s a dark side to the technology. This world is being programmed to follow a beast and the addiction to technology is one of the steps toward bringing this about.

Great observation. Thanks. Blessings always in Jesus name.
